Alexa
It was interesting to play around Alexa. Tina gave us the Alexa today. Liam set it up. Then we asked all kinds of questions.
Liam was most interested in asking for jokes. Conner was much more thoughtful. He asked:"Alexa, are you going to take over the whole world?" Alexa answered: "I am only here to help you." I was a little surprised by his question. It seems like a lot of anxieties these days among people with regard to automation. The thought of being replaced or taken over is even in a child's mind.
Liam then asked:"Alexa, how old are you?" Alexa answered:" I am three years old if measured as human; if measured as cats and dogs, I'm about 28."
I asked:"Alexa, where is your hometown?" Alexa said:"I don't know. I'm still learning." Amazon is still in the process of deciding its headquarter.
Then I asked:"Alexa, do you have feelings?" Alexa said:"I am happy when I'm helping you." I asked a few more questions of which she can not answer.
I recall three years ago when we were in Portland visiting Dave and Pat. Dave was trying to get direction for Columbia Gorge, and Alexa seemed to have trouble of getting him satisfied. After trying for quite a while, Dave gave up. He said to Alexa:"Alexa, you are really dumb shit." Then we heard Alexa shouted back:"Watch out your language, David." It was hilarious.
What I found useful is ask Alexa how to say simple words in foreign language. So far it covers only major languages but it cannot say anything in Latin. In terms of dialect, it can pick up Catalan but not Gaelic.
I guess it's a good tool for somebody lonely who has the need to talk. Anyway, I had a good time in asking questions Alexa cannot answer.
